About the music

The night starts off in Spain with the galante style of Italian-turned Spanish composer Luigi Boccherini in “Night Music from the Streets of Madrid” and the richly optimistic songs of Joaquin Rodrigo, sung by soprano Ellen Wieser, followed by Manuel deFalla’s Andalusian influenced “Spanish Popular Suite“. Moving to South America, an aria from Bachianas Brasilieras No 5 for soprano and strings is a powerfully evocative example of the music of Heitor Villa-Lobos, an impressionistic and nationalistic Brazilian composer in the early 1900s. We hear the powerful and raucous first movement of the String Quartet No 1 by Alberto Ginastera, as well as a musical landscape painting “Impressiones de la Puna“, rich and lush with Argentinean folk themes for flute and strings. The passionate and elaborately rhythmic voice of the tango is featured in a set of pieces by Astor Piazzolla, who revolutionized the fusion of jazz and classical styles. NY-city based up and coming composer David Little’sdescanso is built on the traditional Spanish idea of a resting spot marked by flowers or a cross in memory of a deceased loved one, and is a reflective essay on the feeling of potential loss. The night ends with a set of jazz tunes, from Paquito d’Rivera’s spicy Wapango, to an Afro-Cuban Siboney, and sexy Cirando do Mundo by Brazilian singer-songwriter Maria Rita.

About the art
Local artist Anya Gerasimchuk is a Russian-born painter that emphasizes the connection between various art forms in her work: dance, music & graphic arts. Her Piazzolla- and de Falla-influenced canvases will be a visual highlight dancing in tandem to the sounds of concert:nova’s musicians. In her words, “My abstract compositions are the manifestations of gratitude towards the beauty of the real-life objects or events. They always carry simple titles, like “Rain”, “Flamenco”, “Wind”. My more realistic oil paintings use the “visible surface” of the existing objects or people to once again be integrated into a more abstract and emotional environment - to again express my own fascination by the beauty of the real-life world or the richness of human emotions. The majority of the works, therefore, are a mix of real and abstract, an attempt to unite the visible and the hidden. They are my emotional interpretations of the real world of things, places and events.”

Think small - plates

January 23rd, 2008 | Posted in Press, Twist Lounge at Pigall's

The trend in dining out is to have a little bit of a lot of dishes

BY POLLY CAMPBELL
Small is big. In many regional restaurants, small plates are taking an important place on the menu. Hungry for varied taste experiences, but not so hungry for large portions, diners are warming up to the idea of ordering diminutive plates of food they can share or mix and match as they wish.

Chefs are gratifying them with beautifully presented dishes with lots of flavor.

The trend comes from area diners’ increased food savvy and health concerns, say some of the chefs who create small plate menus. [. . .]

Jean-Robert de Cavel’s new Twist Lounge downtown is another small plate case in point. It’s serving finger-food shrimp wrapped in Bayonne ham. (It’s in the style of traditional French ham from Bayonne, but is actually made in Bayonne, N.J.). It also serves spoonfuls of tuna tartare in Chinese soup spoons on plates especially designed to hold while standing or sitting on one of the lounge’s couches.

MAY WE RECOMMEND …

Jean-Robert French Restaurant Group to open Pigall’s Twist Lounge & Bar on 4th street, on November 27th, 2007!

November 26th, 2007 | Posted in Twist Lounge at Pigall's

Cincinnati, OH - Jean-Robert de Cavel has always complimented the city with fantastic restaurants, phenomenal cuisine and outstanding service. His newest venture is sure to deliver more of the same, but with a twist; his first upscale lounge creation. Pigall’s Twist Lounge & Bar is located right next door to the Jean-Robert at Pigall’s restaurant at 127 West Fourth Street in Downtown; the new lounge is directly connected to the restaurant! The lounge has all the creative design elements and warmth that de Cavel is known for, but it also delivers a comfortable atmosphere that lends itself to most any occasion.

“We always knew the bar at Pigall’s was too small to be a true bar; it is more like a holding space while waiting for your table or just a more casual eating area for some of our customers – but there was not much we could do with the entry of Pigall’s being small,” de Cavel said. “Since Dodd’s Jewelers (located to the left of Pigall’s) closed in June we had an opportunity to extend the restaurant. Opening a lounge was always something we had in mind, and we couldn’t have found a better spot!”

Pigall’s Twist Lounge & Bar is definitely a twist on the Pigall’s concept. With a comfortable, big city feel and a fresh contemporary ambiance. “I wanted the lounge to be warm and inviting, a place that is relaxing but also with a very cool design,” de Cavel said. “We feel the timing is right with the 5 year anniversary of Pigall’s and I think downtown needs a contemporary lounge where guests can enjoy live music at times or soft background music for a relaxing evening.”

The lounge strives to be accessible to guests who want to enjoy life, treat themselves or just take a break from every day life seven days a week. The concept will incorporate a champagne and cocktail bar with a limited bite menu from happy hour through a late evening. The menu will include a selection of caviar and pastries. “We wanted a living room style lounge that has a sexy, fresh feel and a warm décor; I think we hit the mark perfectly,” de Cavel said.

Twist once again partners Marilyn and Martin Wade and his wife Annette, and introduces manager Howie Doan who is coming with 8 years Bar/Lounge experience.

The lounge features a walk through from the Pigall’s bar and also a separate street entrance. In the future the existing Pigall’s bar will be turned into a full eating and wine bar with a small plate menu with wine pairings. A votre santé et a bientôt!

Pigall’s Twist Lounge & Bar will be open 7 days a week from 4 PM to close, and will be available during the day for private parties.
